BLACK PINE CABIN

Built along the Lake Washington waterfront, this detached accessory dwelling unit (DADU) encompasses multiple programmatic elements into one structure. It serves as a work-from-home retreat, guest quarters, a refuge for reflection, writing, reading, boat storage, and garage– all while anchoring the west side of the property to frame the space through which a landscape path runs from the street to the water.

  • The client requested a connection to the lake, reinforcing and encouraging the enjoyment of the shoreline and movement between the interior and exterior spaces. It was also requested that this be a relaxing yet exceptional space incorporating minimal but rich material relationships. This was achieved by the material choices and detailing, creating a warm and light interior. The structure borrows its form and framing techniques from the idea of an upturned boat, clad with shou sugi ban siding, and given a white-washed pine interior. To create the most volume while maintaining land use height restrictions, we used a series of gussets bent to create a wood skeleton. The DADU borrows structural elements inspired by boatbuilding, with repetitive wood frames clad again with wood. The dark vertical siding is anchored to the site through a horizontal concrete formboard foundation.

Blackened steel plate was used to create a contrasting core and a defined hearth at the center of the boathouse. Behind the plate is a bathroom finished in black milestone with a shower opening up to a large wall-to-wall skylight. In addition, the DADU contains a kitchenette, living room and a work-from-home area. The interior was finished with grain-matched pine cladding and cabinets, custom lighting, and custom garage door brackets in both the boat storage and garage to reduce visual clutter creating a cohesive, polished space.
